*New for 2026: Flag Marking for Events and Signature Sunday Flag Sessions.
Signature Sundays:
-Riding with buddies and others on Sundays.
-Working on what you need/want using a purposeful training system.
-Having Mike's free guidance and instruction.
How it works:
Come with your regular riding buddies (or meet others here) and receive a handful of flags. Go out and make a section (or sections) that target what you want to be able to achieve that day. Then Mike comes out and assists you in achieving it.Purposeful.Fun.
What we envision it to look like:
Riders all over the property making various unique and challenging Sections. Mike going around as 'Roaming Instructor' helping individuals and groups with tips and techniques for their challenges.
Riders switching around and trying each other's sections. Having some fun and putting your name on the section you or your group has made...and enjoying the banter and 'competition' that comes along with it. Like: "I rode your Section JoeSchmoe, and had no problem with that tight turn at the bottom of the hill you put in!" or perhaps "That was a ball buster Schmoe! Took me 3 tries but I got it!"
You get the picture, lots of fun whilst learning.

New Event Flag Marking System FAQ's:
*Why are you adopting this as your new system?
Ribbon marking is out of control. It was originally adopted to provide benefits of new layers of fairness and clarity. It's no longer providing either. Organizers are tasked with using inordinate amount of ribbon in order to close up every possible 'dodger' crack. Worse yet, riders are focused on seeking out the ‘dodger’ cracks. This trend has ended up compromising real riding challenges that are intended in a Section. I feel going back to the basic Old School System, is the remedy.
*Did you come up with this yourself?
Heck no. It's the marking system we rode back-in-the-day, and is the way they still ride in Europe. It’s simple. It works.
*Will I be confused if I've never ridden a trial without ribbon marking tape?
Absolutely not. It's simple. Your mind's eye may take some adjustment at first, but it's really super-clear once riders get accustomed to seeing the Flag Marking system.
*How do I know where to go?
Flags show the boundary line (and replaces the tape). Riders will take a look at the Section and connect-the-dots (visually) to know their boundaries on the left and the right. This is called 'Line of Sight Boundary Marking'.
*What are the colors?
Blue Flags for the Left side boundary line. Red Flags for the Right.
*I'm puzzled and can't picture a Section with no ribbon. Can I go wrong once I’m in the Section?
Not hardly. It's simple. Just stay inside the Flags. If you find yourself outside the flags, or outside the visual line that would connect the flags...that's where it’s wrong. (Out-of Bounds Failure-5pts.)
*How many Sections and Loops will be in your new Trials?
Events will be 9-12 Sections, 3 or 4 Loops.
*How will I keep my Score?
Traditional Scoring 0,1,2,3,5
*Will I sign up for a Class?
No. Not initially as I phase in this system and get people aclimated. I want everyone to be clear on the concept of the Marking Flags, and get used to using the Line-of-Sight when plotting their ride through the Sections. Eventually there will likely be Yellow or White Flags added- to delineate some additional lines. But for now it’s just: Blue on the Left, Red on the Right for the boundaries. Simple.
*You say there are no markers within the Section (neither gate, nor class). How will I know what my Ride Line is? for my Ability Level? How will I know where to go?
In each of the 9-12 Sections, Riders must plot their own line and find a way from start to finish whilst remaining within the boundaries of Blue on the Left and Red on the Right.
*I still don't see how the Scoring works out. If all the Riders (Rookie, Novice, Expert, etc.) are all riding the same Section with no Section Markers in it at all… How can I compare my score with riders of my specific ability level?
Believe me, you CAN. The premise of the 9-12 Section Old School Trial method is that 3 or 4 Sections are of Lower Level difficulty, 3 or 4 Sections Medium Level Difficulty, and 3 or 4 Sections of Upper Level difficulty. Basically: 3 Easy, 3 Medium, 3 Hard. So for example: a Novice Level Rider may be able to negotiate a line (from Start to Finish) through the Upper Level Sections, but may end up doing so with a 3 or may find themselves with a 5. Since all the Novice Level Riders will be facing the same challenge in that Section, it will be clear each Rider’s ability by the points they’ve accrued. Lowest Score wins.
Feel Free to contact us with any further questions (about anything) .Looking forward to this system in 2026 and ‘Just Ride’.
